Klaviyo email templates: where motion fits in an ecommerce flow
Klaviyo's template editor, what it can and cannot do with animation, the GIF workflow that works today, and the generated-per-product future we are building.
Klaviyo owns a huge share of ecommerce email, and its template editor is competent at what template editors do: blocks, brand styles, product feeds pulling from your store. What no email platform does, Klaviyo included, is MAKE the visual assets those templates hold, which matters most for the one asset class that outperforms in the inbox and is hardest to produce: motion.
What Klaviyo templates handle well
Structure and data. Universal content blocks keep headers and footers consistent across campaigns and flows; brand styles hold your colors and fonts for text and buttons; product blocks pull live items, prices, and images from the catalog into abandonment and browse flows. If your store's email looks inconsistent, the fix usually is not more design, it is using these systems properly, one template family, blocks reused, styles locked.
Where motion enters, and where it stalls
Klaviyo displays animated GIFs like any image, in campaigns and flows alike, so everything in our GIFs-in-email guide applies directly: product motion in the hero, first-frame-safe design for Outlook, size inside the clipping budget. Countdown timers drop in as dynamic image URLs from the timer services. The stall is production: the flow email is automated, but its GIF was hand-made once, generically, and reused for every product and every recipient, which wastes exactly the per-product data Klaviyo is famous for.
The per-product motion future, concretely
The interesting build is joining the two systems: your product feed already carries images, names, and prices per SKU; a motion engine with an API can render a small branded animation per product, the catalog-scale logic applied to the inbox. An abandoned-cart email whose hero is a two-second branded motion of THE product left behind, generated, not designed per-send, is the concrete thing our Klaviyo integration is being built to do; the groundwork (OAuth patterns, template mechanics) is already mapped from the founder's earlier Klaviyo product work.
Meanwhile, the pragmatic setup
Lock one template family with universal blocks. Add motion selectively, launches and winbacks, not every send, as brand-consistent GIFs under 1MB with the banner rules applied. And if per-product motion in Klaviyo is the pipeline your store needs, say exactly that on the waitlist below; integration order follows demand.
